In 2005, painter Scott Prior came to Zea Mays Printmaking with an intriguing project. He wanted to create editions of prints based on a number of his paintings. He wanted them to capture the spirit of the paintings, without being reproductions.
Scott had significant digital skills and came up with an innovative approach. We would color separate images of his paintings in Photoshop and then digitally print just the color fields, leaving out all of the line and tonal work. He then laid a piece of frosted Mylar over the color fields and did pencil drawings of the images full of line and value. We made photopolymer plates from the pencil drawings and printed these on top of freshly printed digital color prints. The results were a beautiful combination of the digital color and hand drawn line work.
