During Spring 2023 Abdessamad El Montassir came to the Smith College Museum of Art from his home base in Morocco, as an artist in residence.   El Montassir’s interdisciplinary and research-intensive work brings together poetry, artifacts, plants, and architecture to explore questions of memory, trauma, and the environment in North Africa, particularly in the Sahara.

As part of his residency, he wanted to create two editions of mezzotints and we were so fortunate to have been invited to print these editions for him.  Each print represents an aerial view of the Saharan desert.

Abdessamad worked on the two copper mezzotint plates at our studio over the course of two weeks, refining the image as we proofed.  Finally, we printed two editions of five prints each for portfolios published by the Smith College Museum of Art.
