Beyond serving as protective storage structures, enclosures play an essential role in the presentation of the works they contain. This weekend intensive workshop will cover all aspects of creating customized enclosures for prints, drawing, editions, and artists’ books. Students will learn how to construct portfolio enclosures and slip cases from both paper and board. Participants will be guided through how to precisely measure and cut binder’s board, paper, and bookcloth to develop the necessary techniques to adapt these structures for any book or collection of prints. We will discuss material choices for archival preservation of art works as well as how these forms can act as an extension of a visual book’s overall concept or design.
Students should bring several prints, drawings, or photographs and 2 small books to base their measurements off of when creating enclosures. Materials and tools will be provided by the studio. No previous bookbinding experience is required.
