In this course, we will look closely at outstanding woodcut artists. We’ll learn about their lives and inspirations, and explore their approaches to composing and carving images. Using their work as inspiration, we will create a series of woodcuts “in the style of” a range of spectacular woodcut artists, in order to expand our carving and expressive vocabulary.
Every two weeks a new artist (or related artists) will be introduce. The following week, students will explore those artists’s works and make drawings inspired by their style and approach. We will then share our working drawings, getting ready to plan and carve our block. During the following week we will carve and print our blocks. When we meet again, we will share our woodcuts, and then explore a new artist.
Between class 8 and 9 we will have the opportunity to complete any unfinished work, and during class will reflect back on the discoveries we made along the way.
This class will mostly be done in black and white, so that we can focus on composition, style and carving. Beginning and experienced woodcut artists are welcome.
