Thursdays, 2:00-5:30 PM, September 23 – October 28, 2021 at Zea Mays Printmaking
$350 non-member, $315 member
$40 materials fee includes 2 blocks, paper, ink
In this workshop we will explore color woodcut processes, including reduction and multiple block, both alone and in combination. This workshop is designed for woodcut artists with some background in the medium to go deeper into their practice. Printmakers new to woodcut will be able to get a foundation as well, and jump in to the process along with more experienced woodcut artists.
Each week will include a demonstration of a technique, beginning with a review of the basics. Artists will be encouraged to develop their own artistic ideas through the processes we explore together. The work of both historical and contemporary woodcut artists will be referenced throughout the course. Emphasis will be on learning and growing together as a community of artists, and broadening our understanding of what is possible within the medium.
Topics will include:
- Tool use and care
- Block preparation
- Image transfer
- Inks, transparency, printing
- Stencils and masks
- Color reduction
- Multiple block color prints
- Combining above techniques
Artists will be required to bring their own tools. A list of suppliers will be sent prior to the workshop. 2 blocks, ink and paper included.
