Remember playing the game Telephone when you were young?  One person whispers a statement to the person next to them, then that person whispers it to their neighbor and on and on around the circle with the last person speaking the now radically changed statement aloud. Our exhibition is a visual riff on this childhood game, exposing real world issues about communication and interpretation in our contemporary culture.

Two artists, one from Zea Mays Printmaking and one from Peregrine Press each created a print based on a secret verbal prompt. Over five months, artists from Zea Mays Printmaking (Florence MA) and Peregrine Press (Portland ME) have responded to each other’s prints.  Photographs of the first two prints were sent to the next round of printmakers for their response, and then to the next group until the group of 75 artists had responded to each other’s prints.

This exhibition explores the aesthetic relationship of the prints to each other as well as the complexity of communication. Moving from the realm of the hand pulled print, members of the public are invited to respond and continue the game of Telephone through Instagram until March 31, 2017. A slideshow loop of the Instagram feed will be included in the Portland, ME exhibition. To become a part of the digital exhibition visit: to view the prints and respond by using the hashtag #telephoneexhibit on Instagram.
