Woodcut is a wonderfully direct and accessible form of printmaking, which yields a range of imagery from bold and simple to detailed and textural. The process of bringing an image to life through carving is both soothing and meditative.
In this workshop, we will learn about preparing blocks, transferring images to the block, carving tool use and care, and printing with Caligo water soluble oil based inks. Because woodcut does not require a press, it is an excellent choice for a home practice.
Looking at masterworks and our working drawings, we will explore how positive and negative shapes, texture, value and a range of carving techniques contribute to creating beautiful and exciting woodcut images.
Newcomers and experienced printmakers are welcome! Small class size (limited to 6 people) will allow for individualized attention, and time between meetings will allow participants to work on carving between classes.
