These prints are part of my “Gibigianna Suite”, an ongoing series that began during my fellowship residency at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica Venice in early 2020.
As I was describing my love of water and my general fascination with wave patterns to my Italian students, they responded in one voice, “Ah, Gibigianna!”, and then explained this word as the Italian term for patterns of reflected light on surfaces; a phenomenon that suffuses all of Venice.
I am a printmaker and sculptor. I think in terms of building when making any art. These prints were “built” of many layers. Multiple etched copper and aluminum plates were printed in transparent layered inks in various configurations to achieve an atmospheric quality.
