Lift Ground Test 3A

Test Summary
I am attempting to solve the problem of the Edinburgh lift not coming off the plate in certain areas. I will paint for a short period of time and dry the lift on the hot-plate for 5 minutes. I want the lift to be dry to the point where it comes off the plate but is not fused to the copper’s surface.

Plate Preparation
I degreased with soy sauce that was rubbed onto the copper plate using a piece of rolled felt, rinsed and then dried with a clean rag and blow dryer. The Edinbrugh lift is a mixture of 3 teaspoons of Windsor Newton artist masking fluid, 5 eraser tips of gouache, and half a teaspoon of warm water. I painted the lift ground onto the copper plate for 5 minutes using a variety of different brushes and placed it on a hot-plate set at 150° for 5 minutes. I poured the Z-Acryl hard-ground emulsion across the copper plate and caught in a water tray. I stood the plate up vertically and allowed it to dry in the open air for 5 minutes. I placed the copper plate in the hotbox for 30 minutes to harden the Z-Acryl. After the hardening I placed the copper plate in a bath of warm water. Areas that I painted the Edinburgh lift too thin fused to the plate. All other areas lifted fine. I applied an aquatint in five passes to the copper plate with a Paashce airbrush set at it’s finest setting. The aquatint was air dried for 5 minutes and placed in the hotbox for 20 minutes.

Etching Notes
The plate was etched in a vertical etching tank of Ferric Chloride at 38° Baume.

Timed Application of Mordant
15 Minutes

Removal of Grounds
The ground was removed using a stripper bath of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda and water (100 grams/1 liter).

After Bath Evaluation
The etch was successful in all areas except the places that I painted the Edinburgh lift too thin. These areas became baked onto the plate and acted as a stop-out.

Inking Methods
The plates were inked with unmodified Graphic Chemical & Ink Co. Bone Black Etching Ink #514. The ink was carded onto the copper plate with mat board scraps, wiped with used tarlatan and newsprint.

Test Conclusion
The print came out great and the Edinburgh lift ground lifted easily. It is important to paint the ground thick so that it can be rubbed off successfully.
