Woodcut and Haiku
October 19 @ 10:00 am - November 9 @ 5:00 pm
$520.00Wednesdays, October 19th – November 9th, 10 AM – 5 PM
with Julie Lapping Rivera
In this workshop we will explore woodcut as an open-ended, experimental process. Using haiku as a point of departure, our carving will be inspired by the spirit and imagery of poetry. This approach will invite us to investigate mark making in new ways. From there, we will explore variations in inking and printing, with an emphasis on transparency and subtle color combinations. Working with square format blocks will allow us to experiment with turning our blocks, layering, overprinting, ghost prints and more.
Each week we will be introduced to new techniques and then given time to explore the possibilities. Topics will include:
- Carving, working with our tools
- Color/ink mixing
- Registration
- Stencils and masks
- Transparency in papers, inking, and waxing
- Layering, ghost prints
- Chine colle and collage, adhesives
- Monoprinting in combination with woodcut
This workshop is appropriate for beginning and experienced woodcut artists. For those new to woodcut, a basic introduction to tools and block preparation will be offered.
