As a young artist, experiencing Rembrandt’s self portraits was a formative art moment for me. I felt the artist’s soul traveling through time to speak to me! I have fallen in love with portraits as a unique form of communication.

Woodcut brings particular possibilities and challenges to the process of creating a portrait. In this four week workshop, we will explore those possibilities together, from conception to execution.

We will begin by finding the best expressive means for your portrait project. Your depiction can be representational, abstract, imaginary, and/or symbolic. You might choose to create a black and white woodcut, a color reduction or a multiple block print. By scheduling our workshop as a once a week meeting, you will have time between our workshop days to develop your ideas and carve.

Block needs will vary depending on each artist’s choice as to technique (one block or multiple blocks) and preferred size. Julie will discuss block needs in advance of the workshop via email. Please allow at least 10 days for delivery of blocks from McClain’s Printmaking (www.imcclains.com) and choose 3/8 inch thickness (for consistency of press pressure).

The studio will supply ink, paper, and all basic supplies. Please come with carving tools and some general ideas as to who you wish to depict.
