The Tonal Block: Mastering Values in Woodcut

August 25 @ 10:00 am - August 28 @ 5:00 pm

$730.00

Tuesday-Friday, August 25-28, 10 AM-5 PM

with Julie Lapping Rivera

Chiaroscuro = light and shade

Chiaroscuro woodcut emerged in 16th century Europe, introducing a brand new technology: the use of multiple woodblocks to create color prints. These images were generally monochromatic and employed three or more layers from light to dark, each on separate blocks, to build the image.

This workshop will approach chiaroscuro in a different way. Using one block and color reduction, we will explore tonal modulation and three dimensional volume through careful attention to carving and inking in multiple transparent layers.

We will begin with some practice exercises in carving and inking before embarking on a larger project. Please come to the workshop with several tonal drawings to choose from. Imagery can be representational or abstract. Our final block size will be 8 x 10 inches. However, artists who wish to bring their own block of a different size may do so.

Materials fee of $30 will cover inks, paper and incidentals.

We are grateful to McClain’s Printmaking Supplies for their generous partial sponsorship of this workshop.
