We are thrilled to have Robynn Smith from California here at Zea Mays Printmaking for a rarely offered workshop!

Monotype embodies the spirit of creativity. Monotype prints can be simple or complex, monochromatic or brilliant with color, abstract or representational. By the simple act of transferring ink from plate to paper, magic ensues as the unexpected occurs. Welcoming surprise and working with the unexpected is transformational. The press becomes a collaborator, and new avenues of expression open. In this exciting workshop, we will direct the process of working with ink on plates while embracing the unknown.

This workshop is appropriate for all levels, beginners to seasoned printmakers. Experience the beauty and immediacy of monotype, “The Painterly Print,” through demonstrations and individualized instruction.

Many aspects of monotype and monoprint will be covered, resulting in both simple and multi layered, complex prints.  Techniques include but are not limited to; additive and reductive inking, multiple drops, stenciling, pastel transfer, water soluble crayon transfer and chine colle.  We will explore scale, color, iconography and image generation.

High quality, non-toxic materials will be used. $20 materials fee covers inks and incidental materials; an additional materials fee for paper and plates will be tabulated at the end of the workshop based on individual usage.

About the Instructor

Robynn Smith is an internationally known exhibiting artist.  For decades she taught every aspect of drawing, painting and printmaking at Monterey Peninsula College. Now she teaches workshops around the world and at Blue Mouse Studios, her home studio in Aptos, California.  Robynn’s first printmaking love is monotype, as it requires an exciting balance of structure and abandon that is exciting and fulfilling.
