Chiaroscuro (light and dark) woodcut flourished in Italy during the Renaissance. The process involves carving two blocks, one that holds the image and another for the tone, replicating the look of an ink line and wash drawing. A great introduction to multi-color woodblock printing for all levels.
For experienced printmakers interested in working with line and tone, this workshop will be an opportunity to expand your printmaking vocabulary. Starting with drawings on toned paper, we will begin with a two block print (one tone and one “key” line block). We will then advance to a three color print (two tonal blocks and one key block). We will explore the basics of image transfer, block preparation, carving, registration and inking in a range of tonalities.
Those new to woodcut and experienced woodcut artists are welcome.
Limited to 8 participants
Registration includes a materials fee which covers plates, ink and paper. You will be notified if additional tools and supplies are needed.
