Are you a beginner artist who struggles to carve out consistent time for your art making practice, or lose momentum between spurts of inspiration? Do you find yourself easily derailed by distractions, mindlessly doom-scrolling, or hitting up against creative blocks? This winter, join a group of fellow artists to renew your focus, nourish your creative practice, and find fresh pathways forward in a supportive community.
This process-oriented workshop series is designed for beginner visual artists who wish to develop a more consistent and sustainable rhythm to their art-making practice. The format of each two hour session will be split between one hour of guided exercises and discussion, with the second hour designated for viewing each artist’s work and providing group feedback.
Weekly Session Topics:
- Rhythm: Showing Up
- Flow: Locking In
- Novelty: Experimentation & Newness
- Connection & Context
- Movement & Momentum
- Reflections, Review, and Looking Ahead
Short, open-ended drawing prompts give artists an opportunity to warm up their hands and eyes at the beginning of each session. Through self-reflective prompts and group discussion, artists will develop individualized strategies for troubleshooting various challenges that hinder creative continuity. Optional homework assignments are designed to give artists fresh ideas to invite experimentation and play in their image-making. The opportunity to share and discuss each artist’s work and process cultivates connection, perspective, and accountability. Emphasis will be placed on open-ended inquiry and creative risk-taking as essential elements in generating work and finding new edges. Artists are encouraged to adapt any of the invitations to meet their own interests, needs, and artistic goals.
Limited to 6 participants. Artists may use any visual arts materials of their choice – the only required equipment is a journal and/or sketchbook.
