Do you love to carve, but have trouble with the harder surfaces of wood and linoleum? During this two-day workshop, participants will develop their individual direction in image-making exploring mark making and relief techniques on soft carving material. In the first session, participants will be guided on how to translate a drawing/image into black and white shapes, how to create a wide range of values within the image and approach a variety of marks, how to transfer the image on the block and carve. The second session a week later will be focused on how to ink, register and print a block.
Basic color mixing, the use of transparency, and paper choices will be addressed. Participants will have a week between sessions to complete the carving of the blocks.
The workshop includes demonstrations, hands-on work time and group sharing.
No press is needed.
Basic materials required include:
- Soft carving x 2 blocks
- Akua relief ink ( one or more colors) or other relief printmaking inks
- printing paper
- misc. tools
