Suminagashi is a traditional Japanese technique for marbling paper by manipulating pigment in water, then taking an impression on paper of the liquid’s surface. The water becomes a monotype plate that’s in constant motion, and the resulting impression on paper is a print that captures the fluid motion.

Each participant will have the opportunity to create several pieces of marbled paper with a variety of pigments available. In addition, set up, materials, and a variety of techniques will be discussed.

About the Instructor

Tate Klacsmann is a Zea Mays Printmaking member and former council member for the Society of American Graphic Artists. His work has been shown nationally and internationally and is included in the permanent collections of the Albany Institute of History and Art and The Smith College Museum of Art, and is part of the flat files of Zea Mays Printmaking. He has been teaching art and art history for more than ten years.
