Registration Deadline: April 11

with Joyce Silverstone

Paper Lithography is also known as Gum Arabic Transfer, and is one of the most direct lithography methods using either photographic or drawn imagery.  This workshop will teach how to make a printing plate from a photo copier and print that plate onto paper, enabling the artist to quickly add photos or drawings to an image.  The ephemeral nature of this process adds an element of surprise!

Paper lithography uses a photocopied image as a printing plate. The photocopy is processed with a mixture of gum arabic and water which saturates the paper to repel oil. The image is then inked with oil-based etching ink using a brayer, where the ink adheres only to the toner, and the wet areas repel the ink. Finally the inked paper plate is run through the press onto dampened paper.

Bring in your high contrast copies of photos or drawings to practice the fundamentals of the paper lithography process. Expect mixed results and plenty of incidental noise from the process and the occasional perfect replica in these one of a kind prints that reflect the fragile nature of printing from paper!

We will be printing with modified Cranfield Etching Inks.

Short phone consults or email exchanges are required before the workshop. We will go over specific choices for images and recommendations for making copies.
