Master Class: Multi-Plate Color Etching with Peter Pettengill

June 24, 2025 @ 4:00 pm - July 2, 2025 @ 3:00 pm

$1,500.00

June 24-July 2, 2025

with Peter Pettengill (instructor) and Liz Chalfin (technical assistant)

This special workshop brings Master Printer Peter Pettengill of Wingate Studio to ZMP to work with a small group of artists on developing a multi-plate color etching. Following the process he uses working with artists such as Walton Ford and Haley Barker, Peter will guide participants through all of the steps to make an edition of beautiful color etchings.  From project planning to plate making, color mixing, registration techniques and printing tips, this workshop will provide participants with the skills to make multi-plate color etchings.  Studio director, Liz Chalfin will assist by helping artists apply Peter’s strategies to our safer and non-toxic etching methods and materials. This is a rare opportunity to work with a master printer.

The workshop will begin with an afternoon of sharing prints and an outline of the process. We’ll hit the ground running on Wednesday and begin by turning sketches and drawings into a key plate. Once etched and printed, this plate will be used to create color plates. We will cover various etching methods including hard and soft ground, aquatint: stage biting and spit bite, lift grounds and more. Once the plates are all made Peter will share printing tips and strategies. Participants will leave with a BAT (ready to print proof) and all of the plates ready to complete the edition.

As  a special feature of this workshop, Peter brings prints and proofs of projects he’s worked on over the years. You’ll see all the steps he used along the way to bring these gorgeous etchings to life!

Materials fee not included, participants will be billed at the end of the workshop based on the amount of metal and paper they use.

About the Instructors

Peter Pettengill began his training in printmaking in 1978 at Crown Point Press in Oakland CA. Over the course of his six years there he participated in and led projects with some of the leading artists of the late 20th century, including John Cage, Sol LeWitt and Wayne Thiebaud. In 1985 he opened his own etching workshop, Wingate Studio, in Hinsdale, NH, printing and working with print and book publishers. Some of the more notable prints created at Wingate include work by Louise Bourgeois, Sol LeWitt and Walton Ford among scores of others. Wingate Studio continues to use traditional etching techniques and multiple plate color etching to engage both established and emerging artists.

Liz Chalfin is founder and director of Zea Mays Printmaking and the studio’s resident artist. Liz has been involved in printmaking for the past 40 years. She teaches workshops at Zea Mays Printmaking, supervises the research at the studio and takes the message and methods of safer printmaking on the road to schools and studios around the world through lectures, demonstrations and workshops. Her prints and artist’s books are exhibited internationally and are in numerous public and private collections including the New York Public Library, Smith College Museum of Art, The DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, The Hood Museum, The Boston Public Library, The Portland Museum of Art, Bowdoin College Art Museum, Museo Internacional de Gravura, Alijo, Portugal, San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in Havana.
