with Catherine Kernan

Guest instructor Catherine Kernan returns for her popular Woodcut Monoprint intensive!

Carving woodblocks can fix an image, setting it up for repetition. Woodblocks can also be used in a dynamic way that yields unexpected results without reducing or re-cutting the blocks. Combinations of woodblocks set in motion long sequences in which related images recur and transform in an endless variety of evolving images.

Bring your cut blocks to the workshop and experiment with ways to use your woodblocks with viscosity rolls, offsets, transfers, lift-offs, block to block inking, and layers of resist. Learn to print the cut-away parts as well as the raised parts. Use interference layers to break up and abstract your images.

Intended for artists/printmakers who have some experience with monoprint and relief, this workshop will be very individualized. In advance of the workshop, each artist will discuss with Catherine what their individual project goals might be including but, not be limited to, scale, paper, image development, block/plate preparation, and technical processes.

About the Instructor

“The premise that human memory and the memories of spaces are dynamic, mutable, interactive, and recur in ever-evolving cycles of repetition and variation underlies most of my work. Using large-scale woodblocks in unorthodox ways as a transfer tool, I build images by laying down ink, removing ink, and developing many viscosity rolls layer by layer, without predicting the outcome, but always keenly in tune with the ink. Interruption and interference with the “perfect transfer” are integral to the process.”

Catherine has been a partner in professional studios since 1982, and is a founding partner of Mixit Print Studio. She authored Singular and Serial: Contemporary Monotype and Monoprint, 2019.

Many private, public and corporate collections own Catherine’s work. Her residencies include:  Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Venice; Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ireland; MacDowell Colony; and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. In 2018 she received a grant from the Pollack Krasner Foundation.
