Hot Tips for Hand Printing

February 25, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Saturday, February 25, 10 AM – 5 PM

with Joyce Silverstone

Not all printmaking techniques require a press! Take a day to learn some methods of printmaking that can be done in your home studio or even at your kitchen table.

Do you love the direct fluidity of drawing? This very simple method of transferring ink through the touch of a tool to the surface of the paper is full of expressive possibilities. Subtle, immediate, mark-making is the pleasure of these transfer drawing printing techniques. Demonstrations will highlight how to make a table-top registration system and how to add variation to the color of the line and the ground of your prints. You don’t have to know how to “draw” to make these monotypes — just bring your curiosity and see what a line feels like.

This is a relaxed workshop with time to practice these printing methods that you can take back to a home studio without a press. Although we will mostly explore printing using monotype plates, we will discuss the basics of how to print carved and drypoint plates by hand as well.

About the Instructor:

Joyce Silverstone is a graduate and traveling fellow of The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her current body of work and her workshop teaching centers around layered multiple plate printing using monotype inking methods.
