with Elisa Lanzi
Do you have a stash of treasured paper odds and ends (e.g., printmaking scraps, drawing fragments, vintage art projects, etc.) that you just can’t bear to part with? Join us in creating one of a kind collaged artists’ books using your upcycled materials.
The workshop will introduce you to collage and bookmaking practice, including composition, color, space, shape, texture, and value. We will be making two book formats – a hinged multi-panel book and a folded book. Methods include hinging, collaging, cutting, pasting, folding, and layout. We’ll also have a special viewing of the collage exhibit in the Gallery with the curators.
We urge you to bring your own paper odds and ends to transform into books. The instructor also will bring a limited amount of handmade paper remnants and print leftovers. Tools are provided but you are welcome to bring your favorites (e.g. exacto-knives, bone folders, scissors, etc.). This workshop will focus on imaginative ways to transform upcycled materials into new art. Accessible to artists and creators of all backgrounds and experience, you will be able to take what you learn and apply it at home.
About the Instructor
Elisa Lanzi is an artist and writer working at the intersection of printmaking and book arts. She draws inspiration from sojourns to the Mediterranean, the American West and New England; her work responds to motifs that span centuries and geography. These themes are explored in monotypes, artists’ books, collage, and handmade paper. Elisa has been part of the Zea Mays Printmaking community since 2004 and has completed the Green Printmaking Certificate. She teaches workshops and exhibits her work locally, nationally and internationally.
