Explore the advantages of adhesive bookbinding for printed matter. During this 2 day intensive course, printmakers are invited to revisit an existing project or curate a developing body work for the visual book format. This course will be dedicated to model building of various single-sided structures such as the accordion, drum leaf binding, and Hedi Kyle’s Storage Book that appear double-sided in the finished form.

 

Throughout the binding demonstrations we will consider proper material handling, physical properties of eastern and western papers, and alternative soft and hard cover options for each structure. In addition to bookbinding instruction, demonstrations will be given on printing techniques for book design, including registration and imposition. Students will use their own prints in combination with new materials to design and bind an original artist’s book. Demo materials will be provided. No previous bookbinding experience is required.

 

About the Instructor

Elysabeth Cianci creates original and editioned printed matter under the imprint Hungermoon Press. Her work is held in several private collections, as well as the Fine Arts Library, Harvard University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Tufts University. Dividing her time between her home in the mountains of Vermont and the Boston area, Cianci serves as Visiting Lecturer in Printmaking at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and in the Studio Arts Department at Lesley University, College of Art and Design. Additionally, she is on staff at the Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies Woodshop at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Harvard University.
