Prints by Doris W. Madsen and Melissa Sutherland Moss

September 8-October 6, 2023

Opening Reception September 8, 4-6 PM at the Sanford Gallery

Melissa Sutherland Moss of Brooklyn, NY and Doris W. Madsen of Easthampton are exhibiting their original artist prints in Eponymous at Zea Mays Printmaking’s Sanford Gallery, September 8 – October 6, 2023. This exhibit marks the artists’ completion of the Artist Mentorship Program.

Both artists utilize a broad range of printmaking and image making techniques. Sutherland Moss is an interdisciplinary artist working across collage, assemblage, installation and social engagement. Through a hybrid of mediums, her practice is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the histories of African and Caribbean diasporas within contemporary media.

Doris W. Madsen is a mixed media printmaker and activist. She utilizes imagery from historic drawings and maps to piece together personal and historical narratives. Her work as an activist for gun violence protection has included curating visual art, creating video content and organizing public presentations.

The Artist Mentorship Program paired Sutherland Moss and Madsen each with a Zea Mays Printmaking faculty member for a specified period. Working closely together on a self-designed course, the mentors guide the artist through technical and conceptual challenges, helping refine the artist’s eye and skill. The work being exhibited was either completed during or after this period.

A reception with the artists will be held on September 8, 4 to 6 pm at the Sanford Gallery, Zea Mays Printmaking, 320 Riverside Drive, Florence, MA.  The hours of the Gallery are Tuesdays through Sundays, 10 am to 5 pm.
