T. Klacsmann

“What are the lives of animals like when no one is watching? I capture the consciousness of animals as they live independently from but intermingled with humanity. I create environments based on places I observe and photograph locally. Then I imagine an unobserved moment in the life of an animal in these places. In addition to animals, these scenes include human-made architecture, vehicles, and/or objects to capture ways in which humanity impacts creatures’ lives even when no human being is physically present.”

Still Then no. 10

“I grew up watching my father navigate the very slow process of making thoughtful photographs. Long car rides to unnamed destinations, standing still and quiet, waiting—my involuntary offerings to his search for the perfect moment. This series of prints evolved from the realization that there is a shrinking distance between his work and mine.”

Liz Chalfin

“I began the series Before in 2019 and was thinking a lot about all of the daunting issues facing humanity in this moment. We are standing before a future hard to fathom. Environmental catastrophe? Mass migration? Societal unrest? Or something more positive – a real consciousness raising and change of course? This series uses layers of prints on thin papers coated in beeswax to express this liminal state we find ourselves in. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the work took on new meaning. Before could be interpreted as before the pandemic. The closeness of the figures harkens to a time when we could touch one another, lean in close to a stranger, put an arm over another’s shoulder.”
