This workshop will provide an opportunity to delve into color theory applied to monotype printmaking. Participants will explore the particular properties of Akua Intaglio Inks that make them well suited for printing subtle layers of color. Explorations in color will be supported by learning easy registration methods for hand printing multiple color plates. Demonstrations will include basic subtractive monotype techniques, how to mix colors to create a color wheel, and how to adjust and modify inks and color palettes. We’ll be combining and adding surface rolls to integrate and harmonize these printed colors. Practice will include mixing beautiful neutral grays and earth tones to gain control and confidence while printing with color.
This workshop is open to beginners with no printmaking experience as well as experienced printmakers. It can also be used as an introduction or a re-fresher course for those familiar with monotype printmaking and how to work with Akua Intaglio Inks.
To meet the challenge of balancing a focused weekend of learning with a manageable (not overwhelming) Zoom time together, this workshop will meet for two hour segments and intersperse demo time and project discussions with individual off-camera time to work. Workshop begins on Friday afternoon with a project that will help to establish the fundamental color approaches covered in this weekend experience. Between meeting times participants can continue working on the project before our next Zoom session.
Outline of weekend workshop:
Friday afternoon 3-5pm: on ZOOM – opening orientation and a demo to begin the first project
Saturday morning 10-12noon: on ZOOM – discussion of project, demo of 2nd project, questions
Saturday noon-3: off ZOOM – work time and lunch
Saturday afternoon 3-5: on ZOOM – apply theories to making monotype studies, demo and questions
Sunday morning 10-12noon: on ZOOM – circle viewing and taking next steps in monotype color, demo and questions
