Baldwin Intaglio Ground (BIG) is produced by printmaker Andrew Baldwin of Trefeglwys Print Studio in Wales, UK as a substitute for toxic traditional intaglio grounds. Zea Mays has adopted BIG as our primary intaglio ground because of its reliability and versatility.
There are many advantages of B.I.G in the intaglio studio. In this weekend workshop, you will learn how to manipulate the ground as a hard ground, soft ground, and aquatint (through the process of sand paper aquatint). Etching in ferric chloride mordant will be introduced, including stop-out techniques, and inking and printing of the plates. There will be time for image development and critique. We will work in black and white.
This workshop welcomes both the beginner and the experienced printmaker.
Copper plates, paper, inks and instructional handouts included.
