Soft Ground with Water-Soluble Ink and Acrylic Mediums Test 1

I am transferring textures from corrugated cardboard, dried plant, sandpaper, and wax paper onto a copper plate coated with Graphic Chemical water-based block printing ink #1659.

Plate Preparation
I degreased the plate with Bon Ami and water made into a paste, then rinsed thoroughly. I built up several thin layers of water-based block printing ink using a small speedball roller. I rolled in opposing directions in order to get the maximum amount of coverage, then layered several textures and covered the copper plate with plastic. I rolled the plate through the press with the plastic still on the plate’s surface. There needed to be enough pressure to push the textured objects into the ground and expose bare copper but not too much so that the plate’s smooth surface got damaged. I removed the textures and allowed the plate to dry for 5 hours.

Etching Notes
The plate was etched in a vertical etching tank filled with 42° Baume Ferric Chloride

Timed Application of Mordant
1 Hour

Removal of Grounds
I placed the etched plate in a bath of warm water and used a nail brush to gently scrub away the ink ground.

After Bath Evaluation
The etch looks superficial.

Inking Methods
Graphic Chemical Perfection Palette Black mixed with 10% easy wipe. The ink was scraped onto the copper plate with mat-board scraps, tarletan wiped and finished with a phone book page.

Paper Soaking Time: 20 Minutes
Press Blanket Setup: Large Takach, 2 Blanckets, 2.0 pressure

Test Conclusion
The printed proof looks light. The textures did transfer but not well. All the transfers are faint.
