Open Studio Access

Access to Zea Mays Printmaking Studio is available to individuals who have an appropriate level of experience in printmaking and a familiarity with Zea Mays’ safer approaches to printmaking. You are eligible for open studio if you take a class or workshop at Zea Mays Printmaking, or by portfolio review and orientation session. Open Studio participants have access to work independently in one or more of the following printmaking techniques: intaglio, relief, monotype, and photopolymer processes.

Zea Mays Printmaking’s fully equipped 2,000 sq. ft. printmaking studio is located on the 3rd floor of the Arts and Industry Building in Florence, Massachusetts. Equipment includes a 32” x 60” Takach etching press, 24" x 36" Praga etching press, small book press, large plate exposure unit for photo-polymer work, ferric chloride vertical tank etching bath, airbrush booth, semi-dark room, light table, paper soaking trays, developing trays, rollers and brayers, hot plate, work tables, paper cutter, library of books and current print periodicals, an archive of prints and more.

Hourly rate—$15/hr.

Private Lessons & Technical Assistance,
Private and semi-private lessons are available to those seeking to learn safer printmaking processes on an individually scheduled basis. Individual technical assistance for print projects is also available.
Prices are as follows:
$40/hr. for 1 person
$60/hr. for 2 people
$75/hr. for 3 people

Open Studio Hours:

Mondays: closed

Tuesdays: 10-5 PM

Wednesdays: 12 – 9:00 PM

Thursdays: 10 AM -5 PM

Fridays: 10 AM -5 PM

1st and 3rd Saturday and Sunday of each month: 11 AM —5 PM

Closed for holidays and occasional special events

The studio will supply the following materials for use during Open Studio:
Black inks
Newsprint
Clean up supplies (vegetable oil and simple green)
Rollers and brayers
Rags
Etching chemicals and grounds
Tools (ink knives, xacto knives, rulers, etching tools)
Blotting towels
Press blankets

Artists must supply their own:
Print paper
Photopolymer film
Printing plates
Tarletan
Q-tips
Inks
Gloves
Brushes
Paper towels
