Welcome to the wonderfully direct and accessible art and craft of woodcut! There is nothing like the meditative process of carving a block and bringing an image to life. In this workshop you will learn all you need to know to get started or to expand your carving and printing techniques.
You will learn about preparing blocks, ways to transfer images to the block, carving tool use and care, and printing with one or more colors. Looking at masterworks and our drawings, we will explore how positive and negative shapes, texture, value and a range of carving techniques contribute to creating beautiful and exciting woodcut images.
We will be working on a 9 x 12 inch shina plywood block. You will leave the workshop with a finished block, a small edition of prints, and all you need to know to bring your practice to your home studio, with or without a press.
Newcomers and experienced printmakers are welcome.
