In The Gallery -

Interpreting Nature: Neil Brigham, Tracy Ducasse, Kate Jenkins

Exhibition dates: February 26 - March 28, 2008
Exhibition viewing hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, 11-4, Wednesdays 12-8, 1st and 3rd Saturday and Sunday of the month, 11-4.

Three member artists will show prints exploring various interpretations of the natural world.  Neil Brigham, an illustrator by profession will exhibit beautifully crafted relief prints of fish, frogs, birds and woodland animals.  Tracy Ducasse's relief prints emphasize the intricate patterning found in the natural world.  Kate Jenkins's expressive monotypes are infused with impressionist color.  Each artist brings a unique vision of the outdoors into our gallery.

Summer Workshops are now on-line!

I'm very excited about the array of workshops we'll be offering this summer.

May - Starting in May we'll have another wonderful Engraving workshop with Barry Moser.  The last one was such a success that Barry agreeed to come back and do it again!  Also in May we're offering a four-evening course in Basic Photoshop for Artists.  This is designed specifically for the needs artists have in making exhibition postcards, jpegs for show entries and a tri-fold promotional brochure.

June - June brings a Reduction Linocut workshop with Susan Stranc.  This method allows artists to print a multi-colored relief print from a single block.  Check out Susan's prints on our website, they'll inspire you!

July - July starts the intensive season.  We've got a great line-up this summer.  Joyce Silverstone will be teaching Monoprinting On and Off the Press which will cover color, tranfer drawing, offset and more.  Next comes Photopolymer Intaglio using Toyobo Printight Polymer Plates - studio director Liz Chalfin covers this technique of turning drawings and digital images into intaglio plates photographically.  We'll follow that with The Extreme Tones Print taught by Mark Zunino, a chance to learn all about acrylic resist intaglio and how to create an etching on copper with gorgeous tonal ranges.

August - August begins with a new one for us Papermaking East and West with Sheryl Jaffe, we'll get wet and make paper!  Then it's on to Chine Colle with Louise Kohrman, where you'll learn how to print on thin papers (perhaps some you've made!) and adhere them to heavier paper in the printing process.  In our final summer workshop, Anita Hunt will offer Scratching the Surface, a non-chemical approach to working on copper plates.

We've added a feature to several of our summer workshops.  It's the "stay an extra day" option.  If you take a workshop and would like to have one more day in the studio to continue your work, you can do so for another $50.  You'll have the support of a studio monitor, but no instruction.  It's a chance to continue the magic on your own!

We also have a limited number of scholarships (up to 50% of the workshop fee) due to the generosity of our shareholders.  If you have financial need you are welcome to apply for a scholarship.  Ask for the application when you make your initial registration deposit.

Our workshops have been filling rather quickly, and I anticipate that the summer ones will as well.  We encourage you to sign up early to guarantee a space in the workshop of your choice!

The Flat File is Open!

Our wonderful "gallery in a box" is full of prints, waiting to be viewed.  The flat file project is a way for viewers to come to the studio, flip through a binder to see small pictures of works of art by 30 different artists, then open the drawer of the flat file and pull out a portfolio of the work.  You can come to look, to curate a show for your gallery or museum, to buy work or to find out more about the artists working at Zea Mays Printmaking.  We're very excited to host our first group visit on March 15th, The Contemporary Art Circle from the University Gallery, UMass.

The Contemporary Art Circle will visit studio for an in-depth tour, demonstrations of intaglio, relief and monotype by Diane Worth, Neil Brigham and Anita Hunt, talks by Liz Chalfin, Stephanie Cramer and of course the chance to puruse the flat files!  This event is only open to Contemporary Art Circle, an exclusive series of events and behind-the-scenes trips for Gallery supporters, dedicated to promoting knowledge and understanding of contemporary art. Visit us at www.umass.edu/fac/universitygallery/ccc/index.html for more information about the Contemporary Art Circle.

If you have a group that is interested in a similar experience at Zea Mays Printmaking, please contact Liz Chalfin, Director

If you would like to come by and see the Flat File for yourself, give us a call at 413.584.1783 and set up an appointment.

Woodblock prints inspired by animals both real and imagined will be on view at the Springfield Museum of Fine Arts from March 4-September 7, 2008, in the exhibition Curious Creatures: Japanese Prints from the Permanent Collection. Japanese artists learned to draw and paint animals as part of their artistic training, often copying the work of their teachers to gain mastery of the subject matter. Some Japanese artists emulated the Chinese tradition of depicting animals as symbols of power rather than living, breathing creatures. Others observed animals in their natural habitat in order to render them realistically. Still others worked within the Japanese tradition of showing imaginary animals associated with mythology. Curious Creatures offers a glimpse into the varied approaches used by 19th- and 20th-century artists such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi, And? Hiroshige, ?hara Sh?son, Utagawa Yoshi-Iku, and Takahashi Shotei. From the delicate fins of a goldfish, to the menacing tentacles of an octopus, to the fierce eyes of a dragon, the prints represent the artists’ masterful techniques and exquisite use of color.  The prints on view are all from the large collection of ukiyo-e prints and paintings donated to the Museum of Fine Arts by Springfield attorney Raymond A. Bidwell. Ukiyo-e, which means “floating world,” depicted the amusements and pleasures of the townspeople during the Tokugawa Period (1615-1858) in Japan. The Springfield Museums are located on the Quadrangle at 21 Edwards Street off Chestnut Street in downtown Springfield. Free parking is available in the Edwards Street parking lots. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. (Science Museum open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.). Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and college students, $5 for children 3-17, and free for children under three and museum members. Springfield residents are free with proof of address. The fee provides admission to all four Springfield Museums and the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden.

Stand Up and Be Counted
The Artists Foundation and others have collaborated to create online tool, Stand Up and Be Counted, to better determine how many artists of all disciplines are living and working in Massachusetts. Artists in all disciplines are encouraged to fill out the survey, which will be used as an advocacy tool for the artist community.
