Call For Entries

ENTRY DEADLINE: July 16, 2007

Zea Mays Printmaking is very excited to host the 4th Annual Artists' Book Exhibition, entitled BookMarks ZMP .   This year's exhibition will be presented in conjunction with the Museums10 "BookMarks" celebration, a region-wide year of exhibitions and programs dedicated to the book.    See the Museums10 website for all the wonderful offerings taking place at museums, galleries, colleges and universities throughout the Pioneer Valley.   We are honored to have Ruth R. Rogers who is the Special Collections Librarian at Wellesley College as this year's juror. We invite you to submit your best work for her review.

What is an artist's book?

In the hands of artists, books are transformed into a medium that must be read with the hands as well as the eyes: a marriage of image and text, a sculptural object, or an interactive encounter.   Books require the focused attention of the viewer for a certain period of time, like a film.   The visual experience unfolds scene upon scene, page upon page. Yet unlike film, the viewer gets an intimate, tactile experience.   Through bookmaking, artists find new ways of communicating and constructing meaning. The books chosen for for this exhibition will show a wide range of interpretations of the concept of an artist's book. Emphasis will be on thoughtful integration of content with form and materials.

The Exhibition: Books will be displayed on shelves mounted to the walls of the gallery. They may also be hung from the ceiling or mounted directly on a wall. Visitors will be encouraged to take the books off the shelf (if possible) and bring them to a table to "read" with clean or gloved hands. Please do not submit work that is too fragile to be carefully handled. Accepted books must remain on display until the close of the exhibit.

Eligibility:   Artists may submit up to three (3) books for consideration by the juror.   Books may be one-of-a-kind or editioned.   They must be the creation of the artist and must contain some element of hand printmaking . The books may also contain other media.   Collaborations are acceptable. No blank books please.   Our mission at Zea Mays Printmaking is to promote safer and non-toxic approaches to printmaking.   Although this is not a requirement for entry, we will give special acknowledgement to books that are created without the use of solvents or other harmful chemicals and processes.

Juror: Ruth R. Rogers is Special Collections Librarian at Wellesley College, where she administers a collection of over 40,000 items, including rare books, medieval and renaissance manuscripts, and contemporary fine press books .   A serious collector and promoter of artists' books, Rogers organized ABC: the Artists' Books Conference , held in June 2005 at Wellesley College, and published the related exhibition catalog, Resonance and Response . Most recently she was the juror and guest curator of the national exhibition Beyond Words: Artists' Books at the University of the South, in Sewanee, TN.

Selection:   Books for the exhibition will be selected   by Ruth Rogers from digital images.   We encourage artists to send a CD-ROM with images of up to 3 books. Multiple views and details of each book are encouraged.

Entry Fee:   There is a $25.00 entry fee this year to help defray the costs of producing the exhibition.

Publicity: A postcard will be produced for the exhibition and sent out to Zea Mays Printmaking's extensive mailing list. Invitations will be also be sent to members of the book arts community and to museum curators. The show will be announced in the local and regional media. Each participating artist will receive a number of postcards for their own use.

Sales: You may offer your books for sale during the exhibition, although it is not required. All sales at Zea Mays Printmaking are conducted between the artist and the buyer. Contact information will be taken from interested buyers and given to the artists to make their own sales arrangements. Zea Mays Printmaking asks for a 20% sales commission for each piece sold.

Submissions: Submissions must be in the form of JPEG   files on a CD. Multiple images showing details of the same book are welcome to give a better idea of the piece.   Please format your images as follows:

300 pixels/inch resolution
1000 pixels length on the longest dimension

Send CD, via regular mail along with entry form, $25.00 entry fee, and a brief bio, resume, and/or artist's statement. Include a S.A.S.E. with enough postage for the return of your materials. Do not e-mail your submissions.
